The Chunichi Shimbun reported that Ryu, who made a successful debut in Japan with the single album “Sakura (Cherry Blossom),” is very likely to be invited to appear on NHK’s year-end all-star program, which Masahiro Nakai, the leader of the popular Japanese group SMAP, and leading actress Yukie Nakama have already been chosen to host.

Meanwhile, some Korean entertainers have appeared on Japanese dramas produced by private broadcasters such as Fuji TV and TBS, but not on NHK.

Korean Song to be Used for Hollywood Movie

A Korean singer’s song will be used as the closing song of a Hollywood film to be shown in Korea. “Last Game” from Jang Woo-hyuck’s second album has been chosen to end the action fantasy film “Night at the Museum” by Shawn Levy.

The director himself participated in the selection of the dance hip-hop song among other Korean songs that the film’s Korean distributor, 20th Century Fox Korea, recommended to its headquarters.

Starring Ben Stiller and Robin Williams, “Night at the Museum” depicts an extraordinary phenomenon where animals and insects on display at a natural history museum come alive every night. Some 150 million dollars was spent to bring them to life on the screen

Sponge Entertainment, Jang’s agency, said that they are very pleased with the selection because it is very rare for a Korean song to be used for a Hollywood film.

Korean Wave Washes Over USA

Millions of Americans follow the romances, feuds and misadventures of the characters on television soap operas. Many of these daytime melodramas have been on the air for decades, and their successful formula has been reproduced in evening prime-time series. Other countries produce these dramas, as well, and South Korean productions have a growing American audience

Their followers don't get much more passionate than the fans in Hawaii. When South Korean singer and actor Kim Min Jong performed in Honolulu earlier this year, fans went wild, even though many didn't even know what he was crooning about. One young woman called herself 'a blond-haired, blue-eyed Korean fan girl.' "I really love, I love the Korean culture, love the movies to death," she gushed. "I like a lot of the dramas, there's just something about it that just grab me." Another woman in the audience, an African-American, chimed in, "I really enjoy the fact that the Korean dramas are really wholesome, they're a lot more wholesome, in their story lines than the American soap operas."

These fans are addicted to Korean television dramas. They say they love the story lines, the good-looking actors, the family values and the music. "Most of the stories are highly emotional," says one. "So you cry a lot, you laugh a lot."

Korean dramas also feature plenty of good old-fashioned romance. But unlike American soaps, there's no steamy sex or violence. That's what appeals to Nora Muramoto, 60. "American dramas are too violent," she says, "they were getting too violent and too much sex involved. And after seeing Korean dramas it was so clean."

Muramoto is also drawn to the charismatic and sensitive male characters in the dramas. "As a Japanese-American woman married to a typical Japanese samurai guy, whatever he says goes. And he tends to wear the pants [be the authority] in the family. Whereas the Korean soap opera guys, they're more compassionate, caring, they take care of their wives and you know they communicate well."

Muramoto has gone to South Korea twice to visit the locations where her favorite Korean dramas were filmed. A few years ago, she founded the Hawaii K-Drama Fan Club, with her friend Gerrie Nakamura, who says the dramas inspire a cultural connection. "When Korean dramas came out," she recalls, "I knew that out there, there were pretty, handsome and Asian, just like me, people, that were able to be heroes, you know, they could be the stars and they could be the hunks." She says she felt connected to that.

Korean dramas have been on the air in Hawaii for more than 20 years, longer than anywhere else in the United States. Jeff Chung, a 38-year-old Korean-American, is general manager of KBFD, which in 1989 became the first station in the world to broadcast the dramas with English subtitles.

Winter Sonata is one of the most popular Korean dramas (Courtesy KBFD) His favorite Korean drama is Winter Sonata. "It is the drama that really sparked the whole Korean pop culture and Korean drama craze in the world," he says, adding that it was extremely popular in Japan as well as in Honolulu. Chung says his audience and revenues really grew in 2002 with the broadcast of Winter Sonata. "It's a fairytale love story, about finding your first love, when you thought that person had passed away in an accident. And it's a great story."

Unlike the stories on American soap operas, which can continue for years, Korean dramas usually end after 16 or 20 episodes. Theodore Jun Yoo uses the dramas to teach students about Korean culture in his history classes at the University of Hawaii.

The professor's favorite mini-series is Dae Jang Geum or Jewel in the Palace. The historical drama, set in the 16th century, is based on a true story about a poor orphan, who beats the odds to become the king's first female physician. "For those who don't know the Chosun period, it was a very patriarchal society," he explains. "And to see a woman deal with all kinds of tribulations and overcome them, I think is extremely empowering, but also entertaining."

TV dramas like Jewel in the Palace are part of what's being called the Korean Wave: dramas, movies and pop music from South Korea that have swept across the Hawaiian Islands and are starting to catch on, on the U.S. mainland. Korean dramas are now being shown on TV stations in major cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York.

They've been available on DVD with English subtitles since 2003. The Mountain Apple Company began distributing them more than a year ago, and their sales have grown continuously. Company president, Leah Bernstein says she thinks she knows why. "The story has a beginning, it has an end. It has a point. And people are really gravitating towards it. It makes you feel good."

It makes Hollywood feel good, too, good enough to begin producing U.S. versions of more than a dozen Korean films. The first, a remake of the South Korean romantic fantasy Il Mare - also known as Siworae - was released earlier this year as The Lake House.

Bae Yong-joon Drama Set Becomes Top Tourist Site

Bae yong jun top korean actor

Up to 30,000 Japanese women will head to Jeju to catch a glimpse of Korean Wave star Bae Yong-joon, affectionately known as Yonsama in Japan. That is because on Sept. 5, shooting of “Taewangsasingi,”a story of the Grand King Gwanggaeto (375~413) of the Koguryo Kingdom, starts.

JAM Tour, which organizes exclusive tours to the shooting location, says it has been looking for customers from Japan and has already gathered some 5,000 female admirers of everyone’s favorite son-in-law. “Even though we explain that actually getting to see Bae Yong-joon shoot a scene won’t be easy, people are lining up to book,” a staffer says. Jam Tour coordinated the dates to match up with shooting times for the drama, and some 1,000 in batches of 200 are expected to visit the set in September alone. By the time filming wraps up next February, some 30,000 are expected to have taken the tour.

Agreeing to ban camcorders or cameras so as not to interfere with the filming, the company was awarded sole rights for the tours after six months of negotiations. A 63,000-pyeong (1 pyeong = 3.3m) set that includes a school for nobles and a royal palace and reproductions of the residences of aristocrats in Jeju city is about 75 percent finished.
Over 100 Japanese reporters crowded the set of ‘April Snow’ with top Korean heartthrob Bae Yong-joon in Samcheok city, Gangwon Province on March 17, 2005.

And already it has become the top tourist destination for Japanese women visiting the island. During the last six months, 31,240 Japanese women have visited Jeju, a 55 percent increase over the 21,000 that visited in the same period last year. Even though the public is not allowed on the entire construction site, 100-150 people can be seen standing around taking pictures every day.

The 24-episode series, which is chock-full of top stars, also features Choi Min-soo, Jung Jin-young, Park Sang-won and Moon So-ri. It will air starting in March next year.

Title so in love
love story in harvard ost

Spring, summer, fall & winter dreams..
Those are shinning like a star
They keep whispering,
"I'm so in love with you"

Spring, summer, fall & winter love..
It is breezing to my heart
and it keeps telling,
"I'll make you rainbow smile"
I remember when we were angels,
when we dreamed about us
All my days were happy just
like a snowy christmas
I wish i'd have them always..

Every step i make writes a story
It is full of the heart
feeling love of my life
and missing friends of my time
I Wish i'd have them all..

In Spring, summer, fall & winter days..
we've been sharing all the hearts
love shines in my eyes
love just won't fade away

I remember when we were angels,
when we dreamed about us
All my days were happy
just like a snowy christmas
I wish i'd have them always..

Every step i make writes a story
It is full of the heart feeling love of my life
and missing friends of my time
I Wish i'd have them all..

If you'd all the way show me the world
where I will stay in love
All my days will be white
just like a snowy christmas
You're just all I need

Prince charming

By JERMYN CHOW
He is a heartthrob who sets hearts aflutter in Asia and has nabbed numerous lucrative endorsement deals. But for now, all Kim Jeong Hoon can think of is sleep.
Despite all the perks that come with fame, the poor chap has hardly had any shuteye for the past month, averaging no more than three hours a night.

And the weariness is apparent when the Korean star ambles into a room overlooking the skyline of Kangnam, Seoul, almost an hour after the appointed time.

Kim Jeong Hoon’s star is set to soar further with the release of his first solo album, Five Stella Nights.“Chesonghamnida,” says the lanky actor as he bows slightly, acknowledging his own tardiness. Chesonghamnida is Korean for “sorry”.
You give the 26-year-old the once-over, trying to find some semblance of South Korea’s 10th most beautiful man (according to a recent online poll by youths done in the country) in the person before you.

What you see is no dashing hunk but a young man of delicate frame who looks knackered and who covers half his pale, but otherwise flawless, face with a baseball cap.

Even as you try to establish eye contact, his eyes say something else: exhaustion.
Our translator explains that the actor had been held up at the hospital where he was seeking a panacea for insomnia, which has plagued him for the past week.

“I don’t know why I just cannot sleep. Maybe I’m used to not sleeping much when filming Princess Hours,” he explains.
Indeed, while filming the hit drama early last year, he was clocking 15 hours a day, seven days a week.

Even now, there is no respite, as he goes into overdrive in the recording studios to prepare for the launch of his new Japanese album soon.
To top it all, he has to cope with his university studies.
Such is the current lifestyle of Kim, who shot to regional fame after starring in the comic book-based romantic drama Princess Hours.

In South Korea, the show was a bona fide hit, achieving ratings of more than 30% viewership. A show is considered a mega-hit once it hits 25% viewership, such as dramas Jewel in the Palace and My Lovely Sam Soon.

How popular is he now? A couple of trips to Taipei in the last few months also saw “tens of thousands of girls” following him everywhere he went, say Taiwanese newspapers.
Though Kim relishes being associated with the popular show, he makes it clear that he is not as magnanimous as his on-screen persona

Though Kirn relishes being associated with the popular show, he makes it clear that he is not as magnanimous as his on-screen persona Lee Yul, a prince who wants to succeed the throne in a fantasy constitutional monarchy Korea.
The actor confesses to being prone to “mood swings” and says he is “not as kind-hearted and soft as Yul”.

But he does share something in common with the ambitious prince in that he “wants to do well and always seeks new opportunities”, he adds.
For sure, he has impressive academic credentials.
The book-smart chap topped an examination in 1999 and was admitted to the nation’s top institution, Seoul National University, to study dentistry.

Some fan sites even peg his IQ score at 146, just four points shy of scientist Albert Einstein’s. And guess what, Lee’s pet subjects are physics and mathematics.
Unfortunately, juggling acting and singing in the now defunct boyband UN (United N-Generation) had taken a toll on his studies.

He dropped out of Seoul National University to pursue acting and Japanese in Chung-Ang University, where he is now in his final year.
“It wasn’t a difficult decision as dentistry turned out to be quite different from what I had expected,” he chuckles, flashing that trademark impish grin that has captivated women fans.
“I was getting bored of it.”
Having proved his acting chops in Princess Hours, he now wants to showcase his singing prowess.

His star is set to rise further with the release of his solo album, Five Stella Nights, in Japan soon, which he is releasing under the moniker John Hoon.
Not surprisingly, he will be singing – in Japanese – about love and heartbreak.
But what about this man-boy’s love life?
His lips part to form a wry smile as he shakes his head, before uttering in a smattering of English: “Too tired ... I just want to sleep now. No time for girlfriends.”
Still, he is kind enough to let on that he had to give up his affections for a girl he fancied two years ago, after finding out that an older friend of his liked her first.

“It’s only the right thing to do. Like what you see in the drama, we have to respect our elders. We are still quite traditional,” he laments.
So is he currently looking for a companion, you ask?

He bites his nails, fiddles with his cap, revealing a little more of his face, before he says with a laugh: “I’m happy hanging out with many of my good friends who are girls.”
Perhaps such humility is the reason this unassuming chap was recently voted the most “prince-like Korean actor” in a poll in China, beating co-star Joo Ji Hoon and the auntie-killer, Bae Yong Jun.

Sadly, his astronomical rise also means that Princess Hours fans will not be seeing him in the second season of the highly-rated drama.
He and his three co-stars – Joo, Yoon Eun Hye and Song Ji Hyo – will not return to the show because they have other work commitments.

Still, despite his busy schedule, the actor apparently makes time for his hobby, manga.
Talking about his pet subject, he becomes very animated. He sits up straight and asks you for your favourite characters.

Even though you confess you are no manga fan, he attempts to pique your interest, rattling on about his favourite titles such as Taiyo Matsumoto’s Ping Pong.
The comics have helped him in his career, he declares, as from them “I pick up a few tips on how to better express myself”.

For the first time in our 40-minute chat, he leans forward, looks you in the eye and says: “I just want to seize the moment. Why think about the future? When I was four, I wanted to be a physics laboratory researcher and look at what I’m doing now.” – The Straits Times Singapore / Asia News Network
