The Story of the Great King and Four Gods
Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi
Producers: Kim Jong-hak (PD), Song Ji-na (Scriptwriter) The Sandglass, Dae Mang (A Great Ambition)
24 episodes
Cast:Bae Yong Joon as Dam-deok (Gwang Gae Toh Dae Wang ) Who was Dam-deok (Gwang Gae Toh Dae Wang)?: He was the 19th king of Goguryeo (lasted from 37 B.C. to 668 A.D.). During the time of Dam-deok, Goguryeo was the most powerful nation in East Asia (yes, even the Chinese dynasty couldn't defeat Goguryeo). At age 11, he was made the Crown Prince and became King when he was 16. In 396, he attacked Baekje (a nation Southwest of Goguryeo) and took over the northern area above the Han River. He defeated the many invasions made by the Yeon Dynasty (China) after 400 A.D. During his reign, the number of castles he took over numbered in the hundreds and villages numbered in the thousands. However, he died at an untimely age of 39.
Storyline: Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo, establish Goguryeo with his Four Gods: Cheong-ryong (Blue Dragon), Baek-ho (White Tiger), Joo-jak (Phoenix), Hyeon-mu (symbolized as a turtle). The Japanese may know them as Seiryuu, Byakko, Suzaku, and Genbu. Jumong marries Soseono, who had a big part in the founding of Goguryeo. They have two sons, Onjo and Biryu. When the son of Jumong's first wife came to Goguryeo in search of his father, and is named Crown Prince, Soseono takes her sons, Onjo and Biryu, South and establishs Baekje. This is how Baekje and Goguryeo were known as 'brother countries'.
As time passed, the Four Gods secluded themselves from society and watched as Baekje and Goguryeo's relationship worsened (worsened more mainly because Goguryeo's king was killed in a battle between Baekje and Goguryeo).
One day, Ju-ahn, 'Hyeon-mu' of the Four Gods, sees two stars sour up into the sky. Since one came from the palace in Baekje, it predicted the birth of 'Su', later known as King Ah-shin. The other star came from Goguryeo, prophesizing the birth of Dam-deok, later known as Gwang Gae Toh Dae Wang.
Realizing that his new master has come to the world, Ju-ahn awaits in the vast Manchuria with a young girl, Sujini, to see which of the two will be his master. Sujini was picked up as an orphan by Ju-ahn and considers Ju-ahn as her father.
Therefore, the story is on the Four Gods looking for their master, Gwang Gae Toh Dae Wang, who was an expert in tactics, the woman he loved (Sujini), who was also loved by the coldhearted King Ah-shin.

Lee Jun-ki Appears in Korea-Japan Joint Film

Actor Lee Jun-ki has been cast in the Korea-Japan joint production "First Snow" directed by Han Sang-hee, who earned a reputation for producing music videos by working with famous singers including Rain and Ivy.
The Japanese Sponichi Shimbun reported Wednesday that Lee had participated in the movie's first shoot in Kyoto on Monday, with rising Japanese actress Aoi Miyazaki playing opposite his character.

Lee plays a Korean university student who moves to Japan when his father gets a job there as an exchange professor. He has a brief but romantic fling with a high school girl (Miyazaki) with a complicated and difficult family background.

The film is co-sponsored by CJ Entertainment and Kadokawa Herald Pictures and produced by Guardtec, which also produced Lee's recent film "Fly Daddy Fly.

" The two stars expressed their hopes in shooting the film. "I hope this film helps improve friendly relations between the two nations," Lee said. Miyazaki, who is appearing in a foreign film for the first time, said, "I will study Korean hard so that I can speak it naturally and act naturally."The 21-year-old actress rose to stardom through her role in "Nana," which became a big hit in Japan last year. Despite her short career, she has been recognized for her performances several times. She received the best actress award at the Festival des 3Continents in 2002 and the young actress award at the Nikkan Sports Film Award.

"First Snow" will end shooting by the end of the year and be released concurrently in Korea and Japan next spring. Source: KBS Global,

Sam Soon Syndrome

The MBC TV drama hit "My Name Is Kim Sam-soon" is giving rise to a highly contagious condition identified as Sam-soon Syndrome that can empty entire streets of all signs of life and plunge sufferers into a topsy-turvy world where plain is beautiful and assertiveness does not put a woman beyond the pale.

The show, which hit the airwaves on June 1, recorded nationwide viewer ratings of 30.5 percent (TNS Media Korea) in just four episodes.
But on June 30, the program's 10th episode recorded national viewer ratings of a staggering 41.7 percent.

Last year, MBC's "Daejanggeum" and SBS's "Lovers in Paris" recorded highs of 57.8 percent and 57.6 percent, respectively, but "My Name is Kim Sam-soon" is the first drama this year to climb above 40 percent.

The syndrome first manifests itself in symptoms of empathy and identification with an entirely fictitious character. Single Korean women in their 20s and 30s are particularly prone to discover themselves in the eponymous heroine.
Sam-soon is lovable because she has so many faults. As another character, Jin-heon the restaurant owner, tells her, "You're attractive. Your charm is that you don't realize you're attractive.'

At 30, Sam-soon is almost an "old maid". Her face is pretty enough and her body on the plump side. She can be a little outrageous at times. Coming from a distinctly unglamorous home, she is the third daughter of a mill, has been dumped by boyfriends who wanted something more, and is in debt to her young boss to the tune of W50 million (about US$50,000).
She has a mountain of complexes. There is nothing spectacular about her.

And yet sufferers from the syndrome love her even as she reflects their melancholy selves.
Nor are they turned off by her brutally frank speech and actions. Watching her pound away at men with her fists, they see and, what is worse, approve of a character presenting a startling contrast to the Cinderella-like heroines of other soaps.

Sam-soon has some things in common with the actress that plays her, Kim Sun-ah, who boldly showed off her boyfriend when the drama's production was announced, just as Sam-soon would have done.

Her awkward accent, the product of a long time living abroad, is no longer a minus factor for the actress, who was brought up in Japan as well as in the United States. Instead, her unique slow pronunciation adds to the charm of the character.
The members of the program's online fan club are beyond recovery. "Sam-soon makes us realize that there are many more normal, hard-working people than there are wealthy and beautiful ones," they gasp.

Primetime TV ruled by Koreanovelas

By Isah V. RedIsn’t it ironic that Philippine primetime television is ruled by drama series from Korea? But, that’s what it is these days.

Korea’s no. 1 TV drama for 2005 is now in GMA Network’s most popular primetime fare. It premiered on Feb. 13 and after close to eight weeks, My Name is Kim Sam Soon has won the hearts of female viewers all over the country as it speaks of women empowerment and proves that being plain doesn’t necessarily mean ugly.

Primetime on GMA-7 is capped by back-to-back Koreanovelas, with My Name is Kim Sam Soon airing after Encantadia and followed by the no. 1 Korean drama in 2004, Jewel in the Palace.
My Name is Kim Sam Soon is a charming romantic comedy. The heroine is neither sexy nor sophisticated; she is an old maid in Korean culture. Kim Sam Soon (played by Kim Sun Ah, who purposefully had to gain weight for the role) is actually referred to as the “Bridget Jones” of Korea (with the wild imagination of Ally McBeal).

Kim Sam Soon breaks the stereotype of a romantic hearoine—she is chubby, unglamorous, tactless, vulgar, and can speak her mind. She hates her name and wants to legally change it to Hanna. In spite of all this, her being honest, wonderful, and endearing makes her attractive to Cyrus (Hyun Bin), the guy who owns a French restaurant where Sam Soon works as a pastry chef.

The series spawned the “Sam Soon Syndrome” in Korea where women began to feel more empowered. It served as a reality check. A woman need not be slim and gorgeous to snag the rich, handsome guy next door. In reality, there really are more ordinary-looking women than the romanticized rich and pretty girls.

This unique romantic comedy begins one Christmas Eve when Kim Sam Soon was dumped by her boyfriend. She gets so depressed about it that she absent-mindedly goes into the men’s room. This is where she first encounters the rich and handsome Cyrus.

When Cyrus asks her to pose as his girlfriend. She agrees since she desperately needed the money to change her name. Yet she soon discovers that she can’t help but fall truly in love with him. And just when it seems Cyrus is starting to care about her, Hanna (Jung Ryeo Won) comes back from Los Angeles.

I have been hooked to My Name is Kim Sam Soon since it premiered on GMA-7. While Jewel in the Palace seems like an epic and therefore interesting, what I found charming in Kim Sam Soon is the naturalistic approach to the story. In the original Korean version, Sam Soon narrates her story and how she fell in and out of love with Cyrus.
